One should one do half-Parikrama of Lord Shiva?

There is a law to do half circumambulation of Shiva. That is because the Somasutra of Shiva is not crossed. When a person circumambulates half a circle, it is called a lunar circumambulation. Shivling is considered as Jyoti and the area around it is Moon. You must have seen a Venus star above the crescent moon in the sky. This Shivling is not only its symbol, but the entire universe is similar to Jyotirlinga. "Ardha Somasutrantmityartha: Shiva PradakshiniKurvan Somasutra na langhayet.

The purity of Shivling is called Somasutra. The scripture mandates that the Somasutra should not be violated in the circumambulation of Lord Shankar, otherwise it is to blame. While explaining the Somasutra, it has been told that from where the water offered to the Lord falls, the Somasutra has its place.

Why Somasutra does not cross: 
Somasutra has a power-source, so while crossing it, the legs are spread and there is an opposite effect on the flow of semen and 5 internal air. This obstructs the flow of Devadatta and Dhananjaya air. Due to which there is a bad effect on the body and mind. Therefore, there is an order of the scriptures to do only half-moon-shaped display of Shiva.
Can then skip: 

It is found at other places in the scriptures that the violation of the Soma Sutra, covered with straw, wood, leaves, stones, bricks etc., does not cause blame, But Shivasyaardh Pradakshina means one should do half circumambulation of Shiva only. From which side should the circumambulation be done?

Always start the circumambulation of Lord Shivling from the left side and go to the water source in front of the water bearer and then return in the opposite direction and complete the circumambulation till the other end.
